Meet The Maker - Rock The Bump

We interviewed Zoe Keeping from Rock The Bump - Pregnant Belly and Body Casting.

Introduce yourself and your business:
My name is ZoŃ‘, I am a work at home mum to two young children and Owner/Artist of Bournemouth based business - ‘Rock the Bump – pregnant belly and body casting’. Rock the Bump works with mums-to-be to create a bespoke, artistic, keepsake of their pregnancy.

When did you start your small business and why?
I found out about belly casting when I was pregnant with my second baby in 2013. I wasn't aware of anyone offering pregnant belly casting locally so got all the kit together so hubby and I could create one ourselves. As is often the case with DIY casting kits we just never got around to doing the casting before baby arrived. A year later I started to explore the idea of creating belly casts for other expectant mums and Rock the Bump was born!

Is your business a full time, part time or spare time operation?
As a work at home with two under 5s (and number 3 on the way!) every day is different as I juggle to fit in my "bump work" (as my two little ones call it!) alongside everything else. Weekends are when I get the most time to focus on Rock the Bump, often seeing clients for casting sessions on Saturdays and spending time in the studio on Sundays getting messy - strengthening and smoothing casts, painting, finishing and preparing casts ready for clients to hang/display in their homes.

What was your most memorable keepsake made?
Last year I had the pleasure of casting Rebecca’s pregnant belly with her husband’s and 4-year-old son’s hands cradling her beautiful bump. This was really special as Rebecca’s husband works abroad so was only home for a very short time to see the birth of his baby and we were lucky to be able to create the cast just in time! I relish the opportunity to work with women and their partners to create custom design, artistic pregnant belly casts that are personal to them, often incorporating artwork that evokes memories not just of their pregnancy but of the life and love they shared before the arrival of their precious newborn baby.

What is your most affordable item?
Prices start from as little as £35 for a basic belly only cast. Customers can then opt for plain, classic, deluxe or custom options to include strengthening of the cast with high grade casting plaster, smoothing and painting/artwork and varnishing. Price is very much dependent on individual requirements based on time and materials involved.

What short term goals do you have your your business?
My focus at the moment is improving my Social Media presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, interacting more with my followers, starting a blog and increasing the visibility of my posts to help spread the word and reach more customers.

What is your long term goal for your business?
So far, I've had the pleasure of casting beautiful baby bumps from Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch to Salisbury, Basingstoke, and Wiltshire with bookings already confirmed for April for two lovely mums-to-be from Surrey and London! Ultimately I would like to see the Rock the Bump brand grow and become the go-to pregnant belly casting studio for all expectant mums.

And now for some fun questions...

City or Countryside? Bit of both. I grew up in the countryside but love Bournemouth as it offers the best of both worlds.

Custard or Cream? Custard.

Cats or Dogs? Both.

Tea or Coffee? Black coffee all the way - needs must…

Facebook, Twitter or Instagram? Facebook – I still struggle to keep it brief on Twitter and Instagram but am getting there…slowly!

Reading a book or watching a film? Neither – I used to love both but have the attention span of a gnat since having children, plus there’s never any time!

Obsessively Tidy or Organised Chaos? Organised chaos…

Meet the Maker - Mini Treasures

We asked some questions to find out more about our Member Nicola Broom and her business 'Mini Treasures'.

How did you decide on your business name and how long did it take?
About a week maybe slightly longer. I was aiming at babies & children as first but have taken another direction since & tend to be taking more adults prints & pets too.

What year did you establish your business? 2009

What led you to create your business?
Having had 2 ectopic pregnancies & losing both fallopian tubes, I had to undergo IVF in order to have my first baby in 2005. I wanted to capture as many memories as I could of my baby daughter as she grew over the years. I came across the fingerprint jewellery range & had one made for my birthday. I looked into a franchise but this wasn't for me so I found out about the training and Mini Treasures was born in 2009.

Is there one item that you’ve created which is more memorable than others?
I have created many memorable items for customers who have celebrated the birth of a baby or a much loved keepsake after the loss of a loved one. Whilst typing this I am looking at a fab keepsake of my own, my 2 daughters 2D prints. I never thought I would be able to have one child so to have two is a miracle.

What’s your most expensive item?
The single most expensive item would probably be a framed sibling casting like mine or a 3D casting I did of 3 sisters (it depends how many children). With the jewellery a customer may purchase an item & add to it as they have extra children so the cost can vary, you may also have a couple of customers buying a joint gift for a grandparents special birthday so they order a number of charms with the grandchildren's prints on.

What’s your most affordable item?
£7.50 for a newborn hanging heart plaque.

What are your plans for your business this coming year?
Looking for a new logo but at present I don't have any ideas how I want it to look.

And now for the fun questions...

What’s your most favourite take away?
Love Indian takeaway, just had it this evening for our wedding anniversary meal whilst the children are asleep.

Which celebrity would you like to deliver your take away?
Ooooo that's a hard one lol.....David Beckham or Ian Somerhalder

What’s your favourite drink on a summer’s evening?
Baileys with lots of ice

Trousers or skirts?
Trousers. I will wear skirts in the summer but you generally find me in trousers.

High heels or flats?
I do love a heel but most of the time I am in flats due to being a mum to a 3 year old & 9 year old, I have a lot of running around

Favourite time of year?
I do love to snuggle up in the winter but I would say summer as its nice to wake up to the lighter mornings, the warm weather cheers everybody up. You have more daylight hours.

Favourite place to visit?

Abroad I would choose Florida. We have been 3 times now. In the UK I love Leeds Castle, the gardens are lovely we purchased tickets in the Easter holidays & have been twice recently. Also love North Wales, we have family there & the mountain scenery is beautiful, especially around Snowdonia.

Meet the Maker - The Little Drawing Company

Danielle Freeman of 'The Little Drawing Company answered some of our questions about herself and her business.

How did you decide on your business name?
The business name took a while, at first I thought I would sell personalised items for the home, this developed into pictures OF people's homes and then onto portraits. "crafty & paintpot" seemed to umbrella lots of artistic ideas so it stuck.

What year did you establish your business?
I registered the website last year and the domain names and have built things slowly.

What led you to create your business?
I love drawing. I work part time in an architectural office as well, drawing and designing extensions and houses. I sometimes develop those drawings into watercolours, particularly if the design needs planning permission, as colour and 3D perspective help others to visualise the scheme. I've drawn all my life and its something I can just melt into. When I draw and paint the time seems to fly, I'm a bit of a night owl so usually my husband has to tell me to stop and go to bed!

Is there one item that you’ve created which is more memorable than others?
The first picture that comes to mind is a watercolour I painted of a friend's house. My confidence was quite low at the time, I was looking to start work again and money was tight. My friend gave me some great advice and switched my motivation back on. As a thank you I painted a picture of his beautiful house. It was the first thing I had drawn since before my children were born and every time I look at it, I smile and feel motivated all over again.

What’s your most expensive item?
An A3 Pencil & Watercolour painting is most expensive but I am looking to simplify my product range and look a bit more closely at branding...

What’s your most affordable item?
We are currently about to launch our first 'Baby Event' an A4 pencil drawing of a your child for only £22 with free P&P..

What are your plans for your business this coming year?
Oooohh, I have sooooo many ideas, prints of celebrity faces, work on business branding and packaging, summer fairs, loads more competitions and prizes and obvious TONS more drawing etc. My brain sometimes buzzes at 100mph but I may have to invent a time machine that actually produces 'extra time' first....

A little bit of fun...

What’s your most favourite BBQ food?
Anything BBQ is a yes from me. Although nothing says summer like barbecued steak with crispy salad and an ice cold fruit cider....mmmmm!

Which celebrity would you invite to a BBQ?
Mmm, maybe James Corden, anyone that can make me laugh.

What’s your favourite drink on a summer’s evening?
Has to be Kopparburg, chilled with some dry roasted peanuts... simple things.

Shorts or Skirts? Skirts.

Wedges or ballet pumps?
I have to be awkward here, I have a hybrid of both, slight wedge, open toe, ballet style feel and I love them. So I'm going for hybrid!

Day on the beach or a day shopping? Day on the beach.

Favourite place to visit?
My favourite place to visit has to be London. Its beautiful. Busy, vibrant, exciting and you never get bored. Don't get to visit enough so maybe I should plan more trips this year....where's that time machine.....

We asked Sharon Barker of Elanique Jewellery a few questions to help us get to know her...

The company is run by myself and my daughter Danyell. We played with lots of words associated with jewellery, we ended up with elegant and unique and came up with the name Elanique.

What led you to create your business?
My husband who lost his battle with cancer last year. He wanted Danyell and I, to continue and pursue our dreams.

What’s your most expensive item?
A triple heart pendant.

What’s your most affordable item?
As you will see from our Facebook page and website, we don't just create and sell silver items, we have a crystal range also, the crystal butterfly earring are probably our most affordable, in the silver range it would be a small fingerprint charm.

What are your plans for your business this coming year?
I have just passed art clay level 1 diploma, and taking level 2 hopefully in October this year. I would like to create and make more bespoke and commissioned silver items, and we both want to grow the business further.

Some questions just for fun...

What is your dream holiday destination?
I would say somewhere like Barbados, but I hate flying so that probably will not happen.

If you could take a celebrity on holiday with you who would you choose?
It would have to be Comedian Alan Carr, he would certainly take my mind off the flight!

Bikini or swimsuit? Swimsuit

All inclusive or self catering? Self Catering

What’s your favourite flavour of icecream? Ohh that would have to be rum and raisin.

One thing you couldn’t live without on holiday? Most definitely makeup.

Meet the Maker - Maria Made It

Here we have another quick interview, this time with keepsake artist and jeweller Maria Bateson of Maria Made It.

How did you decide on your business name?
I was making things for friends and they kept saying "Maria made it" it seemed to work!

What year did you establish your business?
I started making things as presents when my son was little and I was living in Ukraine. I started my business when I returned to the UK in 2013.

What led you to create your business?
I wanted something to do whilst my son was napping, it was -30 outside so needed to be an indoor activity. I didn't speak any Russian so buying clothes and jewellery was tricky and I had a number of friends who wanted to be able to choose colours etc. I did a mini prints course at the London jewellery school last June and my fine silver work just grew itself from there.

Is there one item that you’ve created which is more memorable than others?
Probably the cufflinks I made for my husband with our children's prints on. They were some of the first cufflinks I made and he loves them.

What’s your most expensive item?
Cufflinks with hand/footprints on £110

What’s your most affordable item?
I have fine silver charms starting from £10, with fingerprints from £20 and hand/footprints from £40

What are your plans for your business this coming year?
I am doing a new course in the next few weeks, hopefully I will have some news after that but I don't want to say too much in case it doesn't happen. I also have lots of ideas for new products and collaborations etc. I am also hoping or have a stand at a big local event.

...and the fun questions!

What is your dream holiday destination?
I'd love to go back to NZ and I'd love to take my children on safari but I would be happy anywhere as long as my family are there with me.

If you could take a celebrity on holiday with you who would you choose & why?
Miranda hart (going to see her on Friday night...)

Bikini or swimsuit? Tankini to cover my mummy tummy.

Relax by the pool or explore the area ? Explore always.

What’s your favourite flavour of icecream?
Our local Italian does panna cotta ice cream yum, but I usually have to share with my daughter so am getting less and less....

One thing you couldn’t live without on holiday? Camera.

Meet the Maker - Cobweb Creations

We spoke to Clair Craig from Cobweb Creations about her business selling personalised wooden keepsakes and gifts.

How did you decide on your business name?
The business name came from a tiny heart shaped cobweb that I found while clearing out my very messy bits and bobs box

What year did you establish your business? January 2013. I am self-employed and Cobweb is my main job.

What led you to create your business?
Ill-health meant giving up the day job and I had always made painted or sewn gifts for family and they encouraged me to get started, needless to say I am loving every minute, working from home.

Is there one item that you’ve created which is more memorable than others?
The memorable creation is the hanging heart - My family is tied together with heartstrings. A heart shaped plaque with mini hearts round the edge, all joined together with string and family's names on each heart. It came from knowing what a supportive and loving family I have.

What’s your most expensive item?
The most expensive item would be a set of wedding table display made to colour co-ordinate with wedding theme.

And now some quick-fire questions...

What was your new year resolution?
New Year's resolution was to be positive and laugh loads.

What is your dream holiday destination? Lanzarote

What’s your favourite cake? Chocolate cake

Featured Artist: Fingertips

Introduce yourself, who are you and what do you create that is a bespoke keepsake?

Hi we are Amber & Kathryn a Daughter & Mother team based in Hampshire.

Hi, I'm Amber, a Crafty Creator and Founder of FingerTips Designs. I am a busy Mum to Sophie Jayne and engaged to the lovely Phil. My maternity leave gave me time with my precious daughter and to focus on my passion for all things crafty and enabling people to create.
I have a BA (hons) in Fine Art and specialised in Community Art.
I strongly believe everyone has some Artist ability and love to enable people to realise their potential.
My Mission: To get everyone creating and enjoying Art!

Hi, I'm Kathryn, a fellow Crafty Creator. I have a NFCE Qualification in Wedding Craft and a world of Crafting experience.
My Mission: To source materials from sustainable resources and local suppliers.

FingerTips Designs are a unique way of celebrating all your special occasions. A fun and quirky alternative to the traditional guest book which is not only a great ice breaker but a great activity for people of all ages and abilities.
Your guest’s fingerprints bring the Artwork to life in a truly unique way and sign their name. The effect is stunning and you have a bespoke Artwork to document your event. All designs are custom made to your requirements.
How and when did you start creating what you do?

The Love Tree was the first design I, Amber, created for our good friends who live in America. They got married in America but we couldn’t be part of their big day as our Little Sophie Jayne was only a couple of months old. In May 2011 they came over for a big celebration of their wedding where their friends and family in the UK could celebrate their happy event. I wanted to create something for them that they could take home with them to America and be reminded of all their friends and family in the UK.
After being overwhelmed by the reaction the Love Tree received and how it got everyone talking it started me thinking about the potential the concept had. So back home I started fingerprinting a sheet of paper and got creating fun characters and designs. And so FingerTips was born in June 2011.
I was made redundant while on maternity leave which turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it gave me time to focus on this new venture.
My fellow Crafty Creator and Mother, Kathryn, has been an invaluable source of ideas, knowledge, support and guidance it making FingerTips a reality.

We started very small with 10 keyrings and a Facebook page to test the concept and if there was a market. WOW = the response with had from family, friends and the growing number of fans we were attracting. From this we booked up a craft fair in June and have stormed ahead in a whirlwind!

What is your favourite thing about making keepsakes?

Our fabulous fans! Their enthusiasm and passion for our products is overwhelming and gives us a warm glow inside. To have the knowledge that through our products we have been chosen to be part of their special events and enabling them to document their special day or capture a moment in time in a truly unique keepsake, is amazing. We are always delighted at the positive feedback we receive and love seeing our Designs and concept in action.

What are your most popular/ best selling items?

At our events there is a clear winner in our Keyrings. This was the first product we tested on the public and is still a firm favourite.

Although online our Guest Celebration Kits are trumps. We love creating bespoke Artworks and enjoy working with our customers to create the perfect keepsake for them to document their special occasion.

Are you planning to introduce any new products to your range?
Yes. We have just branched into our new ‘Humour’ range of designs which is our quirky take on the world around us. ‘Textured People’ are offering a different finish to our original designs. I like to be working on many projects at a time to keep my creative juices flowing!

We also have a top secret project under development...all very hush, hush at the moment.

Do you have an online shop/Facebook page/Etsy shop? Where do you think most of your sales are generated?

Our website is undergoing a huge revamp and has been a big learning curve for us. We have created our own website and are the sole admins.

We started small to test our concept and products with 10 keyrings and a facebook page. Facebook is by far the most productive online tool we have. We can upload an image, ask a question and achieve instant market research to our targeted audience! The feedback and suggestions we receive is amazing. I would highly recommend setting-up a facebook page we know have a strong core of fans and over 1,200 followers in 7 months!

We have linked our facebook page with our twitter so whatever we put onto facebook is automatically uploaded to our twitter feed...tricks of the trade!

Now you may not believe this but our email address has generated the most sales! We attended many events and have a mailing list that has been generated through these events. People have contacted us directly through our email address about bespoke orders and our other services.

Featured Artist: Mrs H Makes

Introduce yourself, who are you and what do you create that is a bespoke keepsake?

I've just turned 30 and given birth to my 3rd daughter who is now coming up to 7 months old, my older girls are 9 and almost 13! Yes I know big age gap! I make jointed bears from material supplied by the customer usually outgrown baby items but anything can be used really. I am also in the process of bringing out a range of dolls that can be fully customised, currently I am in the process of obtaining a CE mark so my dolls will be 100% safe for children. All items can be personalised with hand embroidered names and dates or any other wording free of charge.

How and when did you start creating what you do?

After having worked full time most of my daughters lives I decided as this was my last child I would spend as much time as possible with her and considered taking an extra 6 months maternity leave. Not knowing where we would get some extra income from I stumbled upon sewing (making blackout curtains for the baby). I have always been a bit crafty and my main job was deputy manager of a day centre for Mencap, I also held a position with Bupa as events/activities organiser. Anyway I found I had an ability to sew that I never realised was there (must of been in my genes my Nanny was a machinist). I also had all these beautiful baby clothes so started to alter them, I made a lovely dress from a baby vest/onesie and an old tshirt and was shocked at the result (must make another soon). Then I remembered a friend saying she was having a rabbit or something made from her baby clothes and I thought instantly I could do that, so I did!

What is your favourite thing about making keepsakes?

Peoples reactions when they see their bears I actually had a customer cry she was so pleased.

Are you planning to introduce any new products to your range?

I have a few patterns that are sitting in a drawer that keep calling me one of them being a lamb. I'm also thinking of introducing some kind of personalised bunting but I'm keeping that under my hat for now.

Do you have an online shop/Facebook page/Etsy shop? Where do you think most of your sales are generated?

You can find me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/mrshmakesdollsandbears Its still early days for me but will be looking to have a website and also selling on maybe folksy or etsy.

Finally, if you have any special offers or incentives please share them with us.

At the moment my bears are at an introductory price of £25 each or 2 for £45 and 3 for £60 plus p&p

Featured Artist: Blackwood Forrest Gateaux

A bit of an unusual featured artist tonight, Helena from Black Forrest Gateaux is a bespoke cake maker. A cake isn't something you can keep forever but the concept of creating something personalised that is special at a particular time counts as a keepsake in my eyes so here is our interview...

Introduce yourself, who are you and what do you create that is a bespoke keepsake?
I'm Helena Forrest and i run Blackwood Forrest Gateaux, my keepsake is more of a memory as i make cakes, but i do have some customers that havent cut their cake as they have said "they look too good to cut" but on some of my cakes there are my handmade sugar item that can be kept, figures etc

How and when did you start creating what you do?
I started my business at the beginning of 2011 as i'd been making cakes for friends for years and i thought i had nothing to lose, it all started with a page on facebook ask my friends to join and it just snowballed from there within days most of my likers that weren't my friends and i had "proper" customers :-).

What is your favourite thing about making keepsakes?
I love making and designing bespoke cakes something a bit different to suit that person. the stranger the better.

What are your most popular/ best selling items?
The cake i seem to make the most of is my tatty teddy which I can change in to any type of bear i made it in to Pudsey in November.

Do you have an online shop/Facebook page/Etsy shop? Where do you think most of your sales are generated?
I have a page on facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Blackwood-Forrest-Gateaux/170922149616207 which gives me a lot of custom but word of mouth seems to work the better for me.

Are you planning to introduce any new products to your range?

I'm going to start make cake pop just cause my kids loved them when i tried them the other week and see how my customers like them

Thanks for reading our latest interview, look out for the next one, it might even be you!

Featured Artist: Ring of Roses

Introduce yourself, who are you and what do you create that is a bespoke keepsake?

I'm Laura, a single Mum to Rose who was born 2 months early in September last year. In the 'real world' (where people make money and leave the house to go to work!) I work in the social care arena. I've just finished a stint with CAMHS for the NHS and I now work as an Independence Worker. My aim is to do my Masters in Social Work next year. In the meantime, in 'Laura's world', I make unique personalised gifts and keepsakes. These can be anything from fridge magnets to tiny 7cm x 7 cm canvases. Whilst at college studying Art, I developed a technique which allows me to transfer photocopied images onto most surfaces - this has given my work a slight edge as although there are a lot of gifts out their which personalise, there are not many which involve a photo which are purely handmade. My new tag line is 'Putting the person into personalisation'.

How and when did you start creating what you do?

The first attempt was back in 2001 at art college. We were encouraged to experiment extensively with all sorts of different media and in fact, my first attempt was a chair covered in 1950s Barbies! Interesting fact for you: everything has to be done backwards, even the writing! I started trading on Facebook only last month, and it's going very well.

What is your favourite thing about making keepsakes?

I love the physicality of what I do. Every item has to be soaked over night (at least) and then the process to reveal the image begins. This is my favourite (or most feared) part! Although I have an idea about how the image will turn out, the proof is when I start to work into the picture to reveal it, and every time it's a surprise. After that is completed, the image is sealed and embellishments are added, so my work station is quite a production line - I love to see how items are coming together.

What are your most popular/ best selling items?

My Christmas baubles have been a hit, as have my wooden letters. (shown below)

Are you planning to introduce any new products to your range?

I have so many ideas but unfortunately my brain works quicker than my hands! I'm doing some trinket boxes at the moment, and I want to do some money boxes and mirrors. The beauty of the way I work is that it's applicable across so many different levels, so although I do a lot of baby products, the same process could be used for Wedding Favours/Anniversaries, Birthdays, Graduations etc. Basically I can transfer onto anything that someone desires, except glass.

Do you have an online shop/Facebook page/Etsy shop? Where do you think most of your sales are generated?

My website www.ring-of-roses.net is under construction currently, and I have been touring the local nurseries. Combined with facebook, sales have been fairly equal and steady! The more I network, the more sales I get from my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ring-Of-Roses/294407373910590 - but I find it hard to devote the time to that, and do the making (and look after Rose!) I'm thrilled that people enjoy and want my items.

Finally, if you have any special offers or incentives please share them with us!

I have a quandary of the week which is posted every Friday at 7pm for 24 hours. It's a question and the person with the most likes on their answer gets 20% off their next border. Last week's question was: If girls are pink and boys are blue, what are grannies and why?
